Yes, we have rules at our house. Maybe not super-strict, uncomfortable rules, but they’re not too shabby where kids are concerned. No computers or TV in the bedrooms. Limited computer time. Limited TV time (when we remember to enforce it). Bedtimes are strictly required during school. Chores on a regular basis.
The limited computer time rule seems to cause the most distress. With three boys in the house – ages 15, 11, and 6 – this is sure to be the case. However, it’s the six year old who is the most bothered by this rule. That’s because he is a major Club Penguin and Sponge Bob fan.
The other evening, after he’s already used all of his allowed computer time, he comes up with a new approach he’s sure will work in his favor. “Mom,” he says to me as I pass through the kitchen, “I have a meeting at 8pm on Club Penguin and I’ll be fired if I don’t show up. It’s my job.”
A little entertained by the fact that he knows “meeting, job, and fired” all go together, I’m impressed enough to pause. Not enough to give him the extra computer time but you have to give him marks for ingenuity.
